Is Your Dog in Pain? It Could Be Arthritis

Has your dog been acting out of sorts lately?

Perhaps he has been limping or acting lethargically. Or maybe your normally cheerful pup has been growling or moving away when you go to pat her, or suddenly sits when taking her for a walk.

If you notice any odd changes in behavior, it’s a good idea to take your pet to the veterinarian to get checked out. Because the culprit could be arthritis.

According to veterinarians, 65% of dogs 7 years or older have some form of arthritis.

Younger dogs aren’t immune, either… if you factor in pets of all ages, 25% of all dogs in the US have been diagnosed with arthritis. That’s bad news -- because arthritis can cause your dog a lot of pain and negatively impact his or her quality of life.

All responsible pet owners should learn how to recognize the symptoms of arthritis so you can tell if your canine family members are suffering from this painful disease and get them the treatment they need.

Here are 7 warning signs to watch out for:

  • They’re limping or showing signs of mobility issues. They favor a certain leg or show signs of stiffness when they get up from the floor. Maybe they’re no longer able to conduct certain actions or activities, e.g., climbing the stairs or hop up to sleep on your bed.

  • They’ve lost their playful energy. They’re no longer excited to go on their daily walks, or you might find them lagging behind and seem a lot more lethargic in general.

  • They growl, yelp or wince when you pet them. They may be suffering from inflammation in their joints or spine and your touch is causing them discomfort or pain.

  • Their behavior changes. Your normally cheerful companion is showing increased signs of aggression, irritation, despondency, or listlessness.

  • They’re no longer eating as much. They used to dance in excitement for their meals but now they leave their food untouched.

  • They’re sleeping more than usual. Dealing with constant pain and mobility challenges is draining them of their energy and increasing the amount of recovery time they need after every activity.

  • They walk with a pronounced hunch. They may have arthritis in their spine, which can cause stiffness and pain that might lead them to walk with a pronounced hunch in their backs. Also, if your dog suddenly and frequently sit during walks, it may be a sign of joint pain and they are doing their best to let you know they are in pain.

  • If you notice your dog exhibiting any of these arthritis warning signs, we strongly recommend you take him or her to your local veterinarian for a check-up right away. Because the sooner your dog gets diagnosed, the sooner you can start managing the symptoms and give your beloved pet the pain relief he or she needs.
